United star Andrew Hughes is ready for battle...
After returning to the Leeds United side in a midfield role, Andrew Hughes could be set for yet another positional change this coming weekend when Peterborough United are the visitors to Elland Road.
The former Norwich and Reading midfielder reverted to right-back during last weekend's 2-0 win at Brighton and with skipper Frazer Richardson a major doubt for the Posh game, Hughesy could be set for a return to defensive duties.
Since joining the club in the summer of 2007, Hughes has played on both sides of the defence, all across the midfield, and has even thrown himself forward in games as an extra striker on occasions.
Hughesy carries the tag as the most versatile player in the United squad and few would question his determination and desire wherever he lines up in the side.
"I'll play where I am asked to play," he said. "I take it as a challenge.
"When I came here I was a central midfielder. Just after I came, Wisey rang me to tell me he had a problem at left-back when Eddie Lewis went so I played a few games there.
"I then played a few in central midfield with Jonathan Douglas and by the time I got injured last season I'd played on the left and the right wing as well.
"At right-back I do feel comfortable. I see myself as a footballer who can play a few positions and hopefully that helps the manager in terms of choosing."
Hughesy had been out of the side before Simon Grayson's arrival as manager, but after stepping off the bench against Leicester City on Boxing Day he has since been an ever present under the new boss.
Grayson is the third manager Hughes has worked under since his arrival and the 31-year-old has welcomed the arrival of the former Blackpool manager. Grayson was installed two days before Christmas after a run of five straight defeats proved the end of the road for Gary McAllister.
"You want to go out and win games every week and when you're not you're not doing your job properly," said Hughes.
"You want to play beautiful football and win 4-0 every week, but it's not like that. Like the manager says now, you might have to be horrible and scrap, and set ourselves out to do whatever we can to win a game.
"The manager has worked on defending and making us more solid. You start with a point - I know a point is a set-back because we need to win as many as we can - but you need a starting point.
"I do think we need to be nastier and with the two lads coming in last weekend we were nastier. We want to do it by any means neccessary. Football is a results business, that's how we are judged.
"The new manager has nailed down the basics of what he wants, and I feel that's what we need. Things need doing in certain ways. If he feels it will get us success, I believe it will.
"We have to stick together on and off the pitch, especially on it when things haven't gone as well as we would have wanted."
After winning at Brighton last weekend, United face a good test this weekend with a visit from promotion chasing Peterborough.
The Posh are third in the league - eight points clear of United - and a result is vital for Grayson's side.
"The table doesn't lie," said Hughes. "Peterborough are above us because they deserve to be there and we deserve to be where we are because we haven't been good enough.
"You could argue that we will be underdogs. We have to out and take the game to them and try and win the game, and hopefully they won't sit back."
