Fabian Delph takes on Derby's Claude Davis

Derby County boss Paul Jewell gave a frank assessment of Tuesday's Carling Cup tie at Pride Park when he admitted: "Leeds battered us."

Jewell's Derby scored twice inside the opening 20 minutes but spent the remainder of the contest chasing shadows as United dominated the cup clash with a terrific display of football.

"There was an unbelievable transformation once we scored our second goal," said the Derby manager.

"In between the two boxes they battered us for 70 minutes. Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say they were better than us, but we won the game.

"We rode our luck, I am not ashamed to say that. You need that fortune at times and we have not been the luckiest team in the world.

"Give Leeds credit. I take my hat off to Gary McAllister and his team. Their supporters kept them going as well but it was a good night for us because we are through to the quarter-finals."
