United chairman Ken Bates on potential activity...
United chairman Ken Bates has moved to clear up stories suggesting that the club must sell players before the transfer window closes.
Comments attributed to the chairman suggested that the club had to sell to buy - but he has moved to set the record straight and says any transfer movement before the window closes at the end of August will be for "tactical" reasons.
"Some of comments I made last week about selling before buying appear to have been taken out of context," he told Yorkshire Radio.
"The reason we would sell is because the dressing room is crowded. We have a lot of players, Gary feels that some of them don't figure in his plans, and it would be better for them to pursue their careers elsewhere by playing regularly.
"We don't have any pressures and any buying or selling will be tactical and not financial."
Meanwhile, the club is also monitoring events elsewhere during the transfer window with the chairman revealing a possible windfall could be in the pipeline.
"We have a sell-on clause on a player in demand at another club," he explained.
"We were approached to take a figure to buy out the rights which suggests he may be set to move on.
"We're happy to ride with it, see what happens and take our share."
