Leeds United manager Simon Grayson shuffled his pack slightly for the trip to face Premier League Tottenham with a tactical change seeing Robert Snodgrass playing in an advanced role with Jermaine Beckford, Luciano Becchio dropping to the bench.

For Tottenham, former Leeds youngster Danny Rose was in the starting line-up while ex-Elland Road man Robbie Keane was on the bench.

Casper Ankergren saves the penalty against Tottenham

Leeds had dumped Manchester United out in the third round and headed for the fourth round tie with no fear, and were backed by around 4,500 very noisy fans.

It was the Premier League side who started well, Niko Kranjcar forcing Casper Ankergren into make one stunning early save.

But that was just a precursor to Ankergren making himself a hero on seven minutes when he saved a penalty kick. Micky Doyle was harshly adjudged to have fouled Rose, but Ankergren saved Jermain Defoe's spot-kick.

United were defending well under early pressure, but after one great challenge by Andrew Hughes, it was Ankergren again who pulled off another fine save, this time to deny Gareth Bale from a free-kick on the edge of the box.

While the home side were enjoying the bulk of the possession, United seemed comfortable to play on the break and it was Tottenham who had to be alert on 20 minutes when a Jonny Howson cross was cleared.

It was Jason Crowe who made a superb challenge moments later when Defoe was allowed a run on goal despite appearing to be in an offside position. Leigh Bromby and Doyle also made vital blocks for Leeds as the hosts threatened again, but Grayson's side were standing up well to the pressure.

Jermaine Beckford scores the first goal

With the ball, Leeds were able to find space in the midfield and Heurelho Gomes was called upon to make a good save from Snodgrass after some excellent passing play by United. Beckford also screwed a shot just wide after United capitalised on some sloppy defending to carve out another opening on the half-hour.

After weathering the early storm, Leeds were starting to look a real threat with great movement and Beckford forced Gomes into making another good save after he drilled in an effort following a Howson ball. It was encouraging to watch as United were begiining to pick holes in the Spurs midfield with Neil Kilkenny finding room in the middle of the park.

But just as it looked like honours would be even at half-time the home side snatched the lead in fortunate fashion. Ankergren made a good block with his legs to deny Kranjcar, but the ball came straight back off a static Peter Crouch to put Tottenham ahead.

Leeds responded immediately when Snodgrass looked to play in Beckford, but the striker was denied by Gomes who was able to collect at his feet.

Jermaine Beckford is fouled for the penalty at Tottenham

United could consider themselves unfortunate to be trailing at half-time, but Grayson's men came out of the traps flying in the opening moments of the second half and Beckford came within a whisker of hitting on a poor back pass.

But Beckford and Leeds were celebrating in the 52nd minute. Bromby flicked on a corner, Jermaine Jenas made a hash of the clearance, and Beckford was on hand to stab the ball home from close range to give United a deserved equaliser.

Moments later, Kilkenny tried his luck as United pressed again, sniffing another potential FA Cup shock result. Michael Dawson also shunted out Beckford when the striker was in pursuit of another decent ball forward. Bale also defended well when under pressure from Beckford while Snodgrass had a free-kick blocked by the head of Wilson Palacios.

Next, Snodgrass fired a shot into a crowded box which flew just inches wide of the upright, following good work by KIlkenny.

Jermaine Beckford scores the penalty at Tottenham

Tottenham were restricted and it wasn't until the 69th minute that Ankergren was called upon to make a second half save, the Dane getting down well to an effort from Defoe.

With 19 minutes remaining, Tottenham made two changes to strengthen their attacking options, Roman Pavlyuchenko and United old boy Keane both coming on. And it was one of those changes who put Spurs back in front on 76 minutes, following a well worked goal.

Pavlyuchenko was the man to profit with a good finish after Palacios had played him in following a Defoe cross.

With nine minutes left, Grayson strengthened his own attacking options for the final moments, Luciano Becchio replacing the hard working Doyle.

But it was the home side who were starting to threaten again and after Paddy Kisnorbo denied Jenas, Hughes made a goal-line clearance. Bromby also did well to snuff out Bale, cutting in from the left, while Ankergren saved low from Keane who worked an opening on the edge of the box.

Jermaine Beckford celebrates his second equaliser

It looked as though the game had gone, but after United mounted late raid, Beckford having a pass cut-out, five minutes of stoppage time provided a glimmer of hope. It also provided five more minutes for the superb travelling fans to remind the watching nation what the Premier League is missing.

And deep into that added time, there were shouts for a penalty when Beckford went to ground after an inch-perfect pass from Kilkenny, but referee Alan Wiley remained unmoved. Moments later, he did point to the spot, though, after Dawson was adjudged to have fouled Beckford.

The striker duly dusted himself down, picked himself up, and slammed the ball home for the perfect penalty to give United a second deserved equaliser.

The two sides will now meet again at Elland Road on Tuesday February 2 (7.45pm). The game will be priced at Category B and tickets will go on general sale on Monday. More information will be available shortly on leedsunited.com.
