The Elland Road records continue to be broken with the sell-out attendance of 32,501 the largest crowd to watch a game in the third tier of English football since 1979.

It was the first league meeting between the two clubs since 1987, and United boss Dennis Wise stuck with the same line-up that accounted for Port Vale earlier in the week.

As expected the game started a fair old pace - United were playing into the strong wind and driving rain - and Ronnie Wallwork wasted a good early opportunity for the visitors.

That was the only real chance of an untidy opening 20 minutes as both sides struggled in the conditions.

But it was United who got the breakthrough on 24 minutes, courtesy of Jonathan Douglas. The skipper launched a drive from the edge of the area, and Huddersfield's teenage debutant goalkeeper Alex Smithies failed to prevent the shot from skidding home.

Settled by the goal, Douglas had another deflected to safety while Phil Jevons tried his luck for Huddersfield with an speculative effort which looped wide of the mark.

Jermaine Beckford got his first proper sight on goal on 34 minutes when he latched onto a Tresor Kandol header, but his shot was inches over the bar.

The United boss made his first substitution at half-time with Jonny Howson joining the fray in place of Radostin Kishishev.

And just four minutes into the second half, it was 2-0. David Prutton delivered a low cross from the left and Beckford beat the Huddersfield keeper to the ball before stabbing it home.

Moments later, a United free-kick almost found its way through when Smithies had to push the ball over the top. Howson also forced the keeper into action when he scrambled a curling effort away for a corner.

Douglas was a whisker away from turning home a Beckford cross when United threatened again, and Kandol had a shot blocked, following an Andrew Hughes delivery.

But it was 3-0 on 69 minutes when Beckford bagged his second of the afternoon. The striker had shown some neat skill to release Ian Westlake, who crossed for Douglas. The Irishman was denied by a good save from Smithies, but Beckford was on hand to covert the follow-up.

With six minutes remaining Wise introduced Tore Andre Flo, and within three minutes the Norwegian had scored his traditional goal. Westlake volleyed across goal and Flo's amazing record of goals per minute increased when he converted from close range.

The only frustration from an otherwise comfortable afternoon was when Kandol picked up his fifth booking of the season in stoppage time. He will now miss next weekend's trip to Walsall.

But nothing could take the shine off a 4-0 win which lifted the team up to third place, the highest placing so far the season.
