Dennis Wise named an unchanged side from the one which lost a first league game of the season at Carlisle the previous weekend - but the boss was demanding a response from his players on their first visit to Bournemouth for 17 years.

Once again, the attraction of United proved big and the home club were anticipating a record crowd at their new-look Dean Court home.

Bournemouth

But it was the vast travelling army that was celebrating as early as the fourth minute as Wise got just the response he was looking for.

Andrew Hughes released Tresor Kandol on goal and, after tucking the ball beneath the advancing Neil Moss, the United striker followed his run through to score with ease.

Jermaine Beckford also had the ball in the net after Seb Carole headed against the post - but an offside flag was raised against the Frenchman.

On 17 minutes, Kandol headed wide after a good Frazer Richardson cross, and United had started in commanding fashion.

The hosts were playing five in the middle, but while they enjoyed some possession, United kept men behind the ball and looked to move it quickly forward.

And Beckford, whose pace was causing Bournemouth all manner of problems, was next to go close when, after a delightful turn, he screwed a shot wide on 26 minutes.

Casper Ankergren made his first save shortly after the half-hour mark when he got down well to a low, skidding Joe Kuffour effort, and the keeper was called off his line again moments later when Matt Heath made a decisive challenge.

And Bournemouth were rewarded for their enterprise on 37 minutes when, with United on the backfoot, Jem Karacan rifled a shot past Ankergren from the edge of the box.

Clearly lifted by the leveller, central defender Josh Gowling was denied with a header by Jamie Clapham, who hacked the goal-bound effort clear shortly before half-time.

Both sides forced corners early in the second half, and Bournemouth goalkeeper Moss was called into action on 51 minutes to collect a header after David Prutton ghosted in at the back post.

Three minutes later Moss was picking the ball out of his net as United went back in front following a delightful move. A one-two between Carole and Beckford resulted in the Frenchman delivering a terrific finish to restore the advantage.

Shortly after the hour-mark there was more drama when referee Steve Bennett showed Lee Bradbury a straight red card for an incident on the edge of the Leeds area which left Matt Heath on the floor - yet Bournemouth were awarded the free-kick.

That left the Cherries down to 10 men for the remaining 28 minutes, although they re-shaped and showed a wilingness to fight.

But, as the game entered the final 10 minutes, there was little in the way of chances for either side and United were looking comfortable with the single-goal lead.

And with less than five minutes remaining, victory was all-but sealed when Kandol headed home his second goal of the game, following a Richardson cross.

There was still time for Hughes to collect his fifth booking of the season during the final minutes and Filipe Da Costa was also introduced as a late sub for the midfielder, but it all mattered little as United returned to winning ways on the south coast.
